The Speedway Children's Charities - Virginia Chapter (SCC-VA) Board of Trustees met in mid-November to select its 2007 grant recipients. This was not an easy task when there are so many successful children-focused non-profit organizations competing for any available funding source. Each year the selection process gets tougher and tougher; but as always SCC-VA has stepped up to the challenge. SCC-VA is proud to announce its 2007 grant recipients: the Children's Hospital Foundation, Richmond VA, the Petersburg Urban Ministries, Petersburg VA and the Rappahannock Area Council for Children and Parents, Fredericksburg VA.

The Children's Hospital is a provider of specialized medical and therapeutic services customized to meet the specific needs of children and their families. From teaching a premature infant how to eat by mouth to helping a young adult with cerebral palsy live independently, their expertise in pediatric specialty services and their commitment to providing compassionate care in a family-centered environment turns hope into healing every day. Their specialty programs serve a diverse, but very concentrated, population of children. Well known for their interdisciplinary approach to treating children with illnesses and disabilities, they also help families address and manage childhood development concerns. Plus, they take their mission even further by providing extensive outreach, safety and education programs to thousands of children in our community.

The mission of Petersburg Urban Ministries' is to create authentic community through relationship building with all who live, work and play within the neighborhood; a community that values, promotes, and enhances the quality of life through shared responsibility and participation of all by improving the economic, health and environment in the community. One of its noteworthy programs is Youthbuild. At Youthbuild, students (ages 14 to 16) spend half of their time in education and leadership classes; the balance of their time is spent rehabilitating houses to be sold to low-income persons. This program has provided job training, leadership skills and academic schooling for many young adults. Upon graduation 90% of the youth are placed in job compatible with their skills.

The Rappahannock Area Council for Children and Parents (RACCAP) has been helping and supporting parents and children for over a decade, providing educational and supportive services to the Fredericksburg Area community. RACCAP's mission is to educate the public about positive parenting and child abuse prevention. The organization works with other local, state and national organizations to help families by implementing new and innovative child abuse prevention and awareness programs and provides the technical support needed to ensure our programs continued success. Their motto - Cherish Our Children - demonstrates their commitment to the children of our community.

Each organization has scheduled a special ceremony for its mid-December check presentation. Like any SCC-VA outing, it wouldn't be complete without "50/50" and "Raffle" the racing dog mascots and friends of SCC, in attendance. Remember, "A child's memory is forever." Wishing you and your family a safe and joyous holiday season.
